"I note that today Robert Mugabe has forced the implementation of a second round of elections in defiance of both the international community and democratic decency. The election now being conducted contravenes the principles of free and fair elections."

Sweden's new anti-discrimination act

On 4 June 2008, the Swedish Riksdag adopted a new anti-discrimination act. A new agency – the Office of the Ombudsman against Discrimination – is to monitor compliance with the new act.

Khin Omar of Burma receives award for fight for democracy

Khin Omar of Burma has been awarded this year's Anna Lindh award. Khin Omar is the coordinator of the Burma Partnership network, that aims to promote democratic development in Burma. In particular, Khin Omar has promoted the participation of young persons and women.
